I am working on a new print collection

and am in a bit of a color quandry.
I have a design ... now all that's needed is the right pallete.
I know I want gold and want to pair it with a color

I love pink & gold but also turquoise & gold

So I need a little help from you ...

Which do you gravitate towards the most ?

The pure warmth and girlyness of

or the coolness of ocean colors contrasted by a gilded glow ?

I can't decide ... maybe I should do both ?

New Studio Progress & DIY Project ~ Weathering Wood

As many of you may know

life at Lisa Golightly has taken quite a turn

one of which involved moving from Northern California to Austin Texas.

A brand new location which meant a brand new studio.

Between painting and new design projects, I have been slowly but surely

transforming this tandem garage "workspace"

into the gorgeous studio that lives in my head.

With a beginning like this, the only way you can go is UP right ?

As with any design, you think about everything you need from a space,

then consider the negatives and make the most of the positives.

In my case, limited ( and ugly ) lighting and very little floor space ( 10ft x 12ft )

BUT very high ceilings ( 14ft ! )

My plan is to turn the back wall into floor to ceiling storage using the collection of

wooden wine boxes that I schlepped all the way from CA.

Only thing, they look way too new for my taste.

They need some character ! ( I'll show you how at the end )

Before addressing that, however, I want to show the progress made so far.

My 1st order of business was to build a wall

and find some large french doors to bring in light,

I found this pair of 8 ft tall vintage doors at my local Habitat For Humanity store

... for only 20.00 ( score ! )

Next up, the framing and sheet rock ...

Yay ! 4 walls up and AC on the way !

My daughter gave me these gorgeous crystal doorknobs from Anthropologie

with the money she saved up for Christmas.

( no matter where I live, these will always go with me ! )

I painted all the ceiling and walls white, hung my chandelier ( that also goes wherever I go )

Now for the weathered wood project ...

all you need is some steel wool, apple cider vinegar, a container with a lid,

a well ventilated protected area and gloves.

Put the steel wool in the container and pour the vinegar over it til it's covered

( I used an old large yogurt container to do this )

Put on the lid and let the steel wool soak in the vinegar for at least an hour.

Put on the gloves and rub the soaked steel wool along the grain soaking the wood.

This gets messy so make sure you have newspaper or tarp down in your work area.

When the vinegar dries ... the wood takes on a wonderful dusty weathered look.

The top box is what the bottom box used to look like ... See the difference ?

You can apply the vinegar as many times as you wish until you get the desired affect.

The one above was only done once.
Let everything air out for a day or so

before bringing inside otherwise your house will smell like salad dressing

( trust me on this ).

Well ... one down and about 342 more boxes and new pine shelves to go.

It's going to be a busy weekend. Can't wait to show you the final result of my storage wall

and next project coming up !

The Tiffany's Suite

I'm on a roll.

Yesterday's post about the

Breakfast at Tiffany's Apartment

makes me want to share a little more on the subject.

This time I'm taking you to The St Regis Hotel in NYC

to room 1403 ...

At 8500.00 per night, I may only find myself dreaming about a stay.

But who knows ? Dreams can come true, right ?

And imagine the dreams you could have in this bed !

The dressing table of course, has it's own vanity with bottles and a tray from Tiffany's

Love the dining room !

Everything is so well executed, right down to the sweet little desserts placed here and there.

How did they know I eat Macaroons while I work ? They think of everything.

But I wouldn't be working here, so I think I'll take my macaroons in this chair ...

ahhhhh !

that's a lot of trips to the powder room !

This 15ft wide treasure in the Upper East Side

was the backdrop for all the outdoor scenes in the movie.

( sadly most of the interiors were filmed on a soundstage )

Some People Are Born With Glitter In Their Veins

I am of which, am one of those persons.

Do you sprinkle the sparkly stuff all year long ...

or do you keep it to just the holidays ?

To all the gluttons of glitter

or sparkle suppressed

This one's for you.

I think my favorite place to twinkle is in unexpected places.

Check out these darling gilded suede boots paired with denim.

You can do this yourself ... & easily.

Just mask off with masking/blue tape, generously brush on some Sobe craft glue,

and sprinkle on the glitter, immediately remove the tape, let dry & go be chic.

For champagne sipping nails,
here's a trick I tried last year and can't wait to do again.

Just apply a little nude or sheer pink tone nail polish.

Clearcoat and while wet, sprinkle on a little glitter.

( I like Martha Stewart's fine gold available at Michaels ).

Once dry, clear coat one more time.

For the glamour girls on our gift list

who wouldn't want these hangers ?

Spraypaint a wood hanger with gold or silver paint

generously coat the wood part with Sobe glue or any other thick clear drying white glue.

Cover in gold or silver sequins ( glitter's big sister ).

Just to show, sometimes a little glamour doesn't cost a thing.

Champagne Cork Furniture

These giant furniture sized corks have me bubbling over !

Just like the real thing,

they are made from real cork
... and for environmental reasons alone
that's all the more reason to love them.

I'm thinking these stools would be popping fun accent pieces
not only off duty, but as lightweight, weatherproof extra seating
for any get together, indoors or out.

How about these giant wine corks as side tables ?

With the year marked on them

they'd be perfect for a New Years party or wedding reception.

I have hinted to anyone willing to listen in my family

that I would love one ( or two or three ) for Christmas.

I see they are available here in the UK

I have to tell you,

I married a wonderful man

who has a beautiful home.

And for that I am very thankful.

But the master bath ????

How can I put this nicely ?

Good golly is it boring !

A shrine to the beige rainbow

Time for a color intervention.

We're thinking this space needs a nice vibrant juicy shot of

orange

Such a lovely color to wake up to don't you think ?

So, I played around with the idea last weekend ...

Out came the Absinthe fountain ...

This time filled with orange Listerine.

I just need to take off the old turquoise label

and find or make a new one that compliments the new color scheme.

Maybe find some pretty little glasses and a tray for it all ?

Next, out came my favorite vintage earrings

They are 5" long of dangly orange goodness.

No matter what I am doing, if I am wearing these,

I am smiling.

Heck, I have been known to wear them doing my taxes.

So with a clear color inspiration in place

I'd say were off to a good start.

I will be sure to post more pictures as changes are made.

So I was minding my own business yesterday

when I got the new Anthropologie catalog ...

As expected from good 'ol Anthro, lots of cool stuff

but then I flipped to page 49

and I go a little bananas ...

Ipod docking stations made from antique phonographs ?

Oh yessss !!!

iVictrolas they are called

" repurposed for of-the-moment technology "

They will set you back a little over 800 all the way up to 1100 depending on size.

So I'd be lying if I said I haven't looked on Ebay for the parts

and thought about enrolling my

mechanical engineer/woodworker father

to help me make one.

( like I need any other projects ! )

This obsession actually started when I spotted this

gorgeous french phonograph ( and all the records ! )

at an auction last month ...

Which inspired me to paint this ...

My guest post today is all about charming little dining spaces that show that you don't need a grand room to have a beautiful dining experience.

This little dining space gets a big dose of style from the modern and contemporary designs of the furnishings. Large scale floor mirrors make the small space feel grander.

Lovely art and linens make this small dining space feel special. The mix of chairs and bench seating create options for lingering over a morning coffee or entertaining guests for dinner.

For a small eat-in space in a kitchen, a gorgeous banquette creates a charming dining space that doesn't take up a large footprint. A long narrow table provides ample room for a family dinner, while a stylish pendant light adds a perfect finishing touch.

This dining space in a larger open room that also contains the living area is set apart by dark dramatic color. Black on the chairs and inside the china cabinet make this charming dining space feel more formal.

Designer Barry Dixon created this intimate dining space in his former butler pantry. A banquette seat provides more seating in a tight space.

This small Moroccan style nook is a cozy dining space. The circular space feels intimate and exotic, and the sparkling chandelier and wall sconce really show off the rich colors.

Apartments or smaller homes often do not have designated dining rooms.

Carving out a dining space might mean combining functions,

as seen in this dining space with shelves filled with books and objects.

Sometimes a dining space isn't a dining room. This writing desk would make a cozy table for two in a studio apartment or library. I love the bookcases flanking the buffet.

Ice Cream In Austin

I can't lie.

It's hot here.

I would say it's somewhere between
balmy and molten

But I LOVE it

What a perfect day to celebrate

ICE CREAMMM and all it's frozen dreaminess

Gobbling up the cold creamy sweetness before it melts

A perfect kind of challenge for a lazy summer day

So today we are heading to Waterloo Park to the

Austin Ice Cream Festival

Sampling flavors like lavender, salted carmel, jalapeno and mexican vanilla

I'll be the one in the well accessorized mumu, I mean maxi dress.

Wedding details are beginning to come to fruition.

I am so happy to say
we found the perfect place

Simple yet grand, intimate and private ... exactly what we wanted

our small ceremony will be at a time when day turns to night

Open air and completely lit by gas lanterns

Minutes from downtown Austin, Chapel Dulcinea

sits quietly but daringly on the edge of an ancient walking trail

overlooking the Texas hill country

Behind the huge 200 yr old door is a narrow bell tower with an 1800's bell

for us to ring at the close of the ceremony.

The countdown for the big day continues ... just about 3 weeks away.

in the throes of love, packing and philosophising

3 weeks until we head em up and move em out to Austin.

I have moved before

but I wasn't prepared for the range of emotions

that have come with packing up

the contents of my life this time.

Perhaps it's the contrast

of the life I am leaving behind

to the one I am entering into.

How does a slightly kooky and frivolous girly girl from California

prepare for a future

with a no nonsense manly man in Austin ?

( insert sense of humor here )

Will he really want an absynthe fountain mouthwash dispenser

on our bathroom counter ?

Can vintage sparkles co exist with Brookstone gadgets ?

He is different than me and that's what I love about him.

I love an ironic pairing

contrasts that compliment

such as velvet and burlap

chandeliers and weathered wood

champagne in a paper cup

So why not us ?

He needs a little of me like I need a little of him.

Things that come with love, like patience and understanding

as a visual merchandiser for Macy's.

Put me in from of a beautiful window display

and I'm suddenly a 6ft tall little redheaded girl

my heart palpitated

Of all the finishes and colors

it is silver that I resonate with the most

Why ?

Maybe because of it's chameleon ways

of reflecting back the beauty of any room

No matter what the color scheme,

it always fits in.

So just for fun, I paid a visit to one of my favorite fantasy shopping sites

1st dibs

and typed silver in the search box

Here's what caught my eye ...

( even top ramen would be glamorous under these ! )

Ever since Under The Tuscan Sun

I am obsessed with the Amalfi Coast

Specifically, Positano
it's referred to as "The Pearl of The Amalfi Coast"
